VINCENT VALENTINE The anguish of a lost love... The hate for her killer... The hope for her son?
Who was he? That is the first question that comes to mind when I think of this dark, brooding character. From the moment Cloud finds him hybernating in a coffin, Vincent never ceases to dwell on the past. He speaks of a woman called Lucrecia, and her son Sephiroth. But the one person he hardly ever speaks about is himself.... The information that is definite is this: Vincent was a Turk, he knew and loved Lucrecia, and Hojo shot him after which he altered Vincent's body and locked him in Shinra Mansion's basement for 30 years. But, what actually did happen 30 years before? The information is so sketchy that there are a million things you could come up with that would fit the rest of the story. My interpretation is that Vincent and Lucrecia became seriously involved during their stay at Nibelheim, and kept up the relationship until her death... Even though it is pretty clear that Hojo believed Sephiroth to be his own son. So, was Hojo married to her? Or were they just seriously involved as well? Either way, poor Vincent. However, I do not believe that Sephiroth is Hojo's son -- I believe him to be Vincent's son. You'll find my reasons for this elsewhere on this site, but basically my proof is Sephiroth's and Vincent's EXTREMELY similar appearances, the hints we recieve that Vincent was very involved with Sephiroth's mother, the argument Hojo and Vincent have over something... and Vincent's own words: "Am I about to commit... another sin?" He utters those words before Cloud and his team enter the Northern Cave to destroy Sephiroth. There are other little things, too, but since they are floating around somewhere else, I'll trust that you can find them or have already seen them :). So, if I take this as fact (hey it could be fun), then there is part of the answer to the question of who Vincent was. He was Sephiroth's father. Neat, huh? I have a minor confession to make. Although Sephiroth is my favorite character now, the first time I played FF7, I hated him. Can you guess why? Because I never found Vincent in Shinra mansion. It changed the entire perspective once I did find him. And now Vincent is my second-favorite... Aeris is 3rd. Once Vincent provided more information about Sephiroth's past, I loved the character. Now, on to more Vincent stuff... I recently added a web-poll page to this site, and so far I have noticed that both Vincent and Sephiroth are two of the most popular characters. Since this is the "Vincent's Past" page, I will talk about him, though. What is it about this character that draws so many people to him? His dark, forboding personality certainly makes him interesting and myterious. But, for me, I have found that it is the Vincent who hides beneath his exterior which fascinates me so much. Vincent's past was obviously as painful as it is mysterious, and his outlook on life seems to have resulted from it, at least in part. I find it hard to believe, however, that Vincent could ever have been a jolly person. He was probably always quiet, never feeling up to expressing much other than what was necessary. Lucrecia's affair with him must have been a turning point in his life -- I find it hard to believe that he had any experience with anyone other than her. He grew so attatched to her that he could speak to her more openly than to others, but there was a problem: Hojo. From the little bit we know from the game, I assume that Lucrecia knew and was involved with Hojo long before she ever met Vincent. We know that Lucrecia never left Nibelheim with Vincent, and died during the Jenova Project. We also know that she is Sephiroth's mother. With this knowledge, the loose ends can be tied by assuming that Lucrecia believed herself to be pregnant with Hojo's child, and therefore did not leave him even though she may have been in love with Vincent. So, Vincent probably went through emotional agony, especially during and after Lucrecia's pregnancy. He would have considered her his reason for living at that point, and when she died, he had to replace it with something --I belive that Sephiroth was that something, and also the reason for Hojo to shoot him. It is probable that Vincent was protesting Hojo's treatment of the baby as a lab specimen. When Cloud awakened Vincent 30 years after Hojo locked him away, he had to replace his purpose with something else -- hate for Hojo, and a desire for revenge. Well, there are some other pages on this site you should check out if you want more info. on how I interpret Vincent for my fanfiction. Take a look, and more will be coming to this section soon!!!

THE CHAMBER OF VINCENT'S SOUL |
"This mansion is the beginning of a nightmare..." "Am I about to commit... ...another sin?" |
The more I write about him, the more I like Vincent's character -- he is deep and nearly impenetrable, but well worth being figured out. This page has quotations -- as you can see, from above ;) -- from bothVincent and other characters from FF7 and 8, I think, and will contain thoughts I randomly have about Vincent's character and past. As you may already know, I am obsessed with the idea that Vincent could very well be Sephiroth's father, which would make his "sins" heavy indeed, in his eyes. |
