Aeris is one of my favorite characters in FF7, partly because she dies, I suppose. But that isn't all. She is very generous, and was willing to give her life to save the Planet, at such a young age (22) -- she lost everything, including her future.
Well, I just had to do something about that! I had to do something about the fact that, in the game, Sephiroth is treated as a villain when he was really HOT -- er, uh, that's not what I meant. ;) He was victimized far more than any of the protagonists in the game. Actually, the fact that neither of those characters had a chance to live and change things in the game is the reason for my writing a fanfiction -- I wanted to give both of them a second chance. Well, this is Aeris' Flower Garden, so I should talk more about her than Sephiroth :). There will be a few sections to this page, so it's gonna be long :)....eventually.
Interpretations of the Character Aeris in FF7 In the game, Aeris is probably the most naive character. she comes across this way because she always believes that everything will turn out right in the end, and she trusts and cares for everyone, seeming to fear no one. Despite this naivete, however, (or perhaps because of it) Aeris is the most selfless and caring character in the game. Even when Cloud snaps after giving the Black Materia to Sephiroth for the first time, and actually begins to hit Aeris in a frenzy, she still cares for him, and tries to protect him and her friends by attempting to summon Holy, the only white magic powerful enough to protect the Planet from Sephiroth. Earlier, in the Temple of the Ancients, she sees that Cloud is beginning to go nuts, but won't tell him that anything is wrong -- perhaps to prevent him being pushed even more over the edge. In short, Aeris tries to be the counselor for everyone in the group -- when someone is feeling lost or upset, she is the one who always tries to fix it. The other characters -- Nanaki in particular -- remark later on the Highwind of how much they miss her, and how she helped when she was around. Well, anyway, you can see that it really miffs me that she ended up dying. See the next section of this page for the character she is in my ongoing fanfic, Does Death, Alone, Bring Freedom?
Aeris, As I Write Her Do NOT read this if you want my story to be a surprise!!! lol If you have read some of it already, you know that in my story, Aeris and Sephiroth are both resurrected by Holy in order to help the Planet face an as yet unkown crisis. I have interpreted the Ancients' Promised Land to be the Lifestream of a planet, and therefore Aeris would have found it when she died and her soul returned to the Planet. However....Holy brings her back. I wanted Aeris to have a second chance in life, but being ripped from eternal contenment would be quite an ordeal -- one that someone as previously naive as Aeris would have some difficulty coping with. When she returns, therefore, she experiences something which she had never known before: depression. She tries and tries to dig her way out of it, trying to seem relatively happy to her friends among Cloud's following... But what can replace complete contentment in death, except death itself? Before long, Aeris will find herself wishing for death, not the promising future she has in life. Thus, the title: Does Death, Alone, Bring Freedom? That title also has another meaning, however, which you will find if you read Sephiroth -- Villain or Victim? -- my comentaries on Sephiroth (whenever I get around to putting them up ;) I'm not going to add more to this section just yet, mainly because I want to work everything out in the fanfic before I write more here. But, let me just say that she and Sephiroth share a similar problem in my story -- neither of them seem to have any reason to continue living except for the will of the Planet.
